Anton Grimus

Anton Grimus realised a life-long dream when, at the age of 23, he competed at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics in the Freestyle discipline of Ski Cross. Grimus then went on to make his second appearance on the Olympic Stage, again competing in the men’s ski cross at the PyeongChang Olympics.

Grimus has missed out on progressing through to the quarterfinals in PyeongChang after placing fourth in his eighth final heat at Phoenix Snow Park, ending his second campaign in 30th. In Sochi, Grimus kicked off competition with a blistering seeding run where he placed fifth out of the 31 competitors. But when he took to the course in his 1/8 final, Grimus had a slow start and eventually came unstuck with a crash towards the end of the twisty obstacle course. He ended the competition in 25th overall.

After competition, Grimus shaved off his Ned Kelly style beard he had been crafting for two years. He did so to raise money and awareness for the Rob Kneller Foundation, in honour of teammate Scott Kneller’s father.

The 27-year-old had his fair share of injury problems between Games, including undergoing knee surgery in 2017. He finished in 32nd place at the 2017 World Championships in Spain and has secured a handful of top 20 finishes over the 2016-2018 World Cup circuit.

Grimus grew up in Mt Buller where his parents ran an Austrian-style pension, ski hire and restaurant. A talented rower in high school, Grimus was forced to choose between skiing and rowing. He chose Ski Cross when it made its Olympic debut at the 2010 Vancouver Games.
