AOC to replace stolen hockey gold medals

26 July 2006

Three-time Olympian Katrina Powell OAM has had her two Olympic hockey gold medals stolen from her home in Perth yesterday.

When AOC President John Coates heard of the terrible news overnight he immediately offered to replace the medals.

Powell represented Australia at the Atlanta Games in 1996, Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004. She was a pivotal member of the Hockeyroos teams that won gold in 1996, 2000 and placed fifth in Athens.

The Canberra born striker, known as Triny, retired after Athens. The former Australian captain scored 141 goals and represented Australia 252 times between 1994 and 2004.

A safe containing all the medals won during her career was taken from the study inside her house after thieves broke in through a rear window.

"I'm appealing to anybody who may have the medals to hand them back. They are irreplaceable to me and of huge sentimental value," Powell told the West Australian newspaper.

"As a player in the national team for 11 years these medals are really all I have to show for it and they represent the reward for a lot of hard work over the years."

This incident follows that of pole vaulter Tatiana Grigorieva who had her silver medal from the Sydney Games and other medals, stolen from a safe at a Brisbane property on the 18th of July.

The AOC contacted Grigorieva’s management earlier this week offering to assist replace her Olympic medal.

The International Olympic Committee has moulds of the medals from past Games. The AOC will apply and pay for replacements to be made if the originals are not recovered.
