Australia all out in table tennis

21 January 2007

Australia’s last chance at a medal has been lost on the final morning of the Australian Youth Olympic Festival, after Kyle Davis and Robert Frank lost their doubles match in front of a 200-strong crowd.

The Aussies fought bravely against their Chinese Taipei opponents Chien An Chen and Hung Chieh Chiang, but despite amazing footwork and co-ordination the boys were unable to take a set, going down 11-6, 13-11, 11-6.

The loss places the Australian boys fourth in the doubles competition. The game was the last chance for the Australians to take home a medal in the table tennis, after Kyle Davis lost his quarter-finals singles match to Darius Knight earlier in the morning.

In the girl’s doubles competition, Chinese Taipei’s Hung Chieh Chiang and Hsiao Fang Kung took home the bronze medal after beating New Zealand’s Sophie Shu and Jeny Hung in four sets: 13-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-4.

The doubles and singles final matches will be played on Day 5 from 12:20 p.m.

In the doubles, the Chinese women will take on Hong Kong, whilst the British men will battle it out against China for the gold.

In the singles, the women’s match will be an all-Chinese affair, with Meng Chen taking on team-mate Chen Xi Shi, whilst Britain’s Paul Drinkhall will play Chinese Taipei’s Hung Chieh Chiang for the men's gold.
