Jana pregnant with Beijing in mind
15 June 2006
Dual Olympic 400m hurdler Jana Rawlinson -- formerly Pittman -- is pregnant with her first child.
The 23-year-old has revealed from her London base that she is due in December and couldn’t be happier.
"We are over the moon,'' she said.
"We only had a one-month window to conceive before it would eat into my world champs preparation, so it has worked out perfectly, as quoted by The Australian newspaper.
Jana married her coach and British Olympic hurdler Chris Rawlinson at a beachside estate in March, following her victories in the 400m hurdles and 4x400m relay at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games.
Despite being 12 weeks pregnant, Pittman, who now prefers to call herself by her married name Rawlinson, is still training twice a day.
She hopes to be back on the track in time for the 2007 World Athletics Championships in August in Osaka, Japan.
Rawlinson who has had a terrible run of injuries since her World Championship win in 2003 had indicated she would take time away from competing to prolong her career whether she fell pregnant or not.
The 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing are the ultimate goal. Her fifth place finish in Athens in 2004 was remarkable, considering her preparation was severely hampered by knee surgery, but she has unfinished business at the Olympics.
Rawlinson said the timing of the pregnancy had been planned down to the minute to ensure it didn't complicate her goals of competing in Beijing.
The couple will spend the winter in England before returning to Australia.
