McGee's Tour hopes hanging by a thread

15 June 2006

Australian Bradley McGee could miss next month's Tour de France after suffering an inflammation of a sciatic nerve problem during this week's Tour of Switzerland.

McGee, the prologue winner on the 2003 Tour de France and Olympic team pursuit champion a year later in Athens, pulled out of the Swiss event during yesterday's fourth stage.

"Bradley will have some more tests over the next two days, but if the cause of the problem is not determined, not even he will be able to expect to ride in the Tour," Yvon Madiot, sports director of McGee's Francaise des Jeux team told AFP.

McGee also pulled out of last month's Tour of Italy and tests in Paris and Monaco, where he lives, have failed to decipher the origin of his pain. Madiot is all but certain McGee's Tour hopes are over.

"Starting the Tour with a less than perfect physical condition is possible for a racer of his talent," said Madiot.

"But going with health problems, that's impossible."
